Changing shifters on the KHS

After straightening the rear derailler hanger I attempted to adjust the indexing. However, I never got that far. Although the new cable was threaded through the shifter and in the appropriate slot, it was just wound into the shifter with each practice shift. I disassembled the shifter, mostly in an attempt to retrieve my new cable, but also with a hope that I could see the problem. I didn’t notice anything obviously wrong, but, not having a diagram or something showing the correct assembly, I didn’t have much to go on. I reassembled it and decided to try it one more time. Off the bike, the shifter moved the cable in and out in a seemingly appropriate manner. But, as soon as it was installed, routed, and secured to the derailler, it would no longer move the cable. Thoroughly frustrated, I took it off and ordered a set of $10 Falcon friction thumb shifters. Two of them are less weight than one of the Shimano Deore indexed shifters (approx. 140 grams compared with 120). Adjusting the shifting was easy and I feel they will be more reliable in the long run.
Here’s a shot of the (in my opinion) overly complex indexed shifter alongside the humble friction shifter. (I’m not sure why I didn’t take this as one would see them when in use, but, oh well)
