Triple to Double

I decided to change my triple chainring to a double, since it seemed excessive for my riding, which is primarily urban. I figured out that the Stronglight 93 crankset can be turned into a double by removing the smallest ring and its spacers. Then, with shorter chainring bolts, it is easily reassembled with any chainrings that match the rare 122 BCD size. Basically, the so-called “granny” gear has a minimum tooth count of 39 because it uses the same bolts as the larger rings, unlike most triples. I found some barely used Stronglight chainrings in 52 and 40 tooth counts and reassembled it. Another thing to note is that standard crank pullers will not fit the proprietary size of 23.35, so I had a bike shop take off the crankset and loosen the bottom bracket (now I’m looking for the tool at a reasonable price for the next time!).

That was the easy part. Now the chainline was wrong for a double and the bottom bracket needed to be replaced anyway due to wear.
