Printmaking and illustration have a strong historical connection. Printing was developed as a way to mass-produce art and literature. Illustration, which places priority on conveying an idea, has long been a component of printed material. Together printing and illustration allow for accessible communication. It follows that the medium of contemporary printmaking encourages social, political, and cultural examination. I felt compelled to pursue social commentary when starting to employ this medium. Some of these prints are direct responses to current events, while others are graphic representations of states of mind.
The Struthious Wambler is the first in a series based loosely on 18th century natural histories. Here, though, I imagine a creature composed of dead organic material and worn out man-made objects, somehow coalescing into an inchoate organism.
